Backwards scooter

It takes a lot of practice to learn how to ride a bicycle. You might think it would be easier to ride a scooter instead. But AHHAA’s backwards scooter is on a completely different level – one that could prove difficult for even a seasoned cyclist. When you turn the handlebar in one direction, the front wheel of the scooter turns to the exact opposite. This exhibit will show you how skilled you really are!

Rheoscopic fluid is placed in a thin cylinder. When you spin the cylinder, the light that reflects from the fluid shows the formation of numerous whirls and spirals. Change the speed of spinning and the size and shape of whirls will change as well. This visually stunning exhibit is also a great favourite of our visitors, as each swirl is unique and every spin you create changes the look of the whole exhibit.

3D tic-tac-toe

Everyone has played this game on a piece of paper, but taking on your opponent is completely different in 3D! This exhibit consists of 3 x 9 coloured balls (red, green and yellow). 2-3 people can play at time.

The aim of the game is similar to a regular tic-tac-toe: get three balls of a same colours in a row. What’s different, however, is that in AHHAA’s version of tic-tac-toe, you can create the rows in many different ways, using either one or all of the levels: from top to bottom, right to left or diagonally.

Wave machine

Waves can move in water, air and ground. We’re probably most familiar with the waves in water, as this is where they’re the most visible. However, when looking at a lake or sea, we usually don’t understand where the waves actually come from. Wave machine can easily show you how it happens. The machine is filled with mysterious fluids that move in slow motion, making it especially easy to observe the formation of the waves.

Laser table

A laser is a light source that emits light with constant wavelength and strength. This exhibit will show you how lasers work.

There are pieces of glass of various sizes and shapes inside a transparent cylinder. There is also a laser in the middle of the glass pieces. When you turn the cylinder, a laser beam passes through the pieces and creates an enjoyable light show. When you look more closely, you can see how the direction and reflection of the laser beam vary while passing through different pieces of glass.

Interactive sandbox

Here in this giant sandbox, you can shape the landscape just the way you want to: dig canals and lakes, pile up hills and mountains. A special computer program projects a real topographic map on the sand, so you can easily see how the locations and shapes of higher landforms and bodies of water are related to each other and how different landscapes are pictured on the maps.

Polaroid disco

Polaroids consist of layers of dichroic (e.g. herapathite) crystals embedded in a thin film (such as cellophane or transparent plastic). These layers are capable of polarising light. This exhibit has two parts: an LCD screen and a ´work of art´ made of Polaroid sheets. When separated, they’re both black and white. But when you look at the screen through a spinning polaroid circle, a magical world of colours unravels in front of your eyes.
